ComicCon is back on and in celebration of ComicCraft‘s 15 years in the font business they are offering 50% off their full catalog of fonts until the end of the convention. ComicCraft offers over 200 fonts for sound effects, lettering, and more which are licensed for use in both personal and business projects so long as the font remains on your computer (see the license for details). Prices typically run between $29-$69, with some free and some cheaper fonts, so 50% off is a good deal.

In addition to the discount, ComicCraft also offers an interesting looking “Zap Pack” for $30 with a lettering font, sound effect pack, and diverse set of word balloons. While the font and sound effects are pretty “normal” looking for comic fonts, it looks like a good quality starter kit for someone who likes the look and doesn’t want to draw their own word balloons.

ComicCraft’s sale ends on July 31st and does not include Fontpacks, One-year subscriptions, and already discounted items.

In the tradition of webcomikers donating their time and art, the Web-comic Auction for the Gulf organized by Carly Monardo has begun. Original art from several excellent comic creators is currently being auctioned through eBay and 100% of the profits will be donated to the Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund (managed by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation). The auctions have been released over the course of this week, with the final wave being released Friday, July 9th. Each auction is 10 days long with shipping to the USA and Canada only, so if you’re in those areas jump in now.

The talent is overall very high quality and while some of the auction are already pushing into the multi-hundreds, there are still some potential steals (Girl Genius originals for under $50 as of this article). But seriously, this is a good cause so get in there and push those winning bids up!

Yesterday DC announced that it would shutting down Zuda permanently after their 2 and a half year run as a competition and digital publishing experiment. According to the Zuda blog, the program is going to be rolled into DC’s larger digital initiative and the big company continues to lumber into the 21st century.

If you have any experience in publishing at all, you know that this sort of reorganization happens all the time; some times it’s a good thing and some times it’s bad. In this case it seems like a good thing for DC. They’re taking the opportunity to gather their digital resources together and create a greater whole. The comics published by Zuda should, hopefully, get better treatment as well as they will be more closely aligned with the central imprint. I’ve never been much of a fan of the Zuda project, but a few great comics have come out of it and I hope they are continued.

You can continue following Zuda-related news via their website: The Collective.

UPDATE: I didn’t realize it, but Storming the Tower pointed out that the end of Zuda also means that the comics have all be taken down and, at least for now, are not going to be put back up. Instead they will be transitions primarily to mobile devices. That’s a pity. Since my only mobile device is an Android and I don’t like reading on that tiny screen, I hope they do decide to get the comics back up on the web proper.
